Area 51 CNC Shop

  • MIT students using equipment in Area 51 Shop

A hive of activity, the Area 51 CNC Shop is dedicated to supporting MIT students who, in true mens et manus fashion, are getting their hands dirty in all of the best ways.

Originally acquired in 2007 to support student clubs and teams, it’s now a central fabrication facility with CNC milling and lathe machines, an injection molding machine, and a waterjet cutting machine.

Fall 2020 Access Information

The Area 51 Student Machine Shop is now open by appointment only for extra-curricular use.

All users must have authorized access via the COVID Access system and COVID Pass. Before an appointment is scheduled, extra-curricular access will need to be reviewed and approved.

To  apply for extra-curricular access, students can email Sandi Lipnoski, Administrative Officer, slipnosk@mit.edu. The Student COVID Access Request Team will review submissions.

Please note that requests need to be made in advance as the process for shop access due to Covid precautions can take a week or more.
