With all 3 kits (DNA/RNA, Protein, and tRNA), students will be able to complete protein synthesis: transcribing a gene into mRNA, translating the mRNA into a protein chain, and folding the protein chain into a functional shape.
tRNA Set
Our models are designed to teach processes, in addition to structure. They are made to be manipulated so learners can perform cellular functions with their own hands. All booklets can be used for independent learning as well as classroom lessons. Download the flyer pack about the MIT Edgerton Center DNA and Protein Sets or watch the MIT Edgerton Center DNA and Protein Sets Intro Video.
The tRNA Set is intended to be used with the Protein and DNA/RNA Sets.
tRNA Booklet 1 Activities:
- Name the parts of a tRNA molecule
- Discover the structure of a ribosome
- Assemble and load tRNA molecules
- Construct messenger RNA
- Review the steps of protein synthesis
- Complete translation for 4 different channel protein genes
- Compare the difference between original and mutated protein chains
A short instructional video for students is available on our YouTube channel to support the activities:
- 4 tRNA kits
- 4 tRNA Booklet 1: Introduction to Structure and Function
- 4 Ribosome Mats
Download the tRNA Contents List for photos and description of classroom set contents. For more information about why our tRNA sets only have 4 kits, please read our tRNA Teacher Guide and Set Explanation.
We have a new Teacher Training video for using the MIT Edgerton Center tRNA Set (for use with the MIT Edgerton Center DNA/RNA Set, Protein Set, and tRNA Set, tRNA Teacher Guide, and tRNA Booklet 1). Training videos for the Protein and DNA/RNA Sets are on their separate pages.
MIT Edgerton Center tRNA Teacher Guides coming soon!
For now, please download:

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):
HS-LS1-1. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells.
HS-LS3-1. Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring.
tRNA Teacher Training Video
This is a teacher training video for using the MIT Edgerton Center tRNA Set (for use with the MIT Edgerton Center DNA/RNA Set, Protein Set, tRNA Set, tRNA Teacher Guide, and tRNA Booklet 1). Training videos for the Proteins and DNA/RNA Sets are on their separate pages: Protein Sets, DNA/RNA Sets.
